Health & Safety

This Statement sets out the Company Policy for the Management of Health Safety and Welfare of:
Employees, The Self-Employed, Customers, the General Public and the Environment.

The Statement makes reference to Policies and Procedures, for example:

  • Staff Induction
  • Alcohol and Drug Policy
  • Accident Investigation
  • Civil Engineering & Construction
  • Driving

Staff will be issued, or will have direct access to these documents.

These documents will set out the provisions for:

  • A Safe Place of Work with safe access and exit;
  • Safe handling, storage, maintenance and transport of articles and substances;
  • Information, instruction, training and supervision;
  • A Safe working environment with adequate welfare facilities;
  • Safe Plant and Equipment;
  • Safe Systems of Work.

The Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) places the accountability for staff and contractor Health, Safety and Welfare with the Managing Director. Some of the responsibilities arising from that have been delegated to individuals within the Company. The details of personnel and their specific Health and Safety Responsibilities are given in Job Descriptions, Codes of Practice Policies, and within Operating Procedures. These documents will be regularly updated to take account of any changes in plant, working practices or supervisory personnel.

The hazards associated with particular tasks and the risks to individuals and the environment will be assessed, documented and reviewed. The significant findings of these assessments are available to all interested parties.

All staff will be provided with appropriate supervision, instruction, training and where appropriate protective clothing and health monitoring. Staff will not be asked to undertake any task for which they are not properly trained or adequately supervised.

Staff and the self-employed also have obligations to manage their own safety and that of their fellow workers, our neighbours and to our customers, namely:

  • Familiarise themselves with Operating Procedures and with the Health and Safety Rules;
  • If asked to perform a ‘new' task, tell their Team Leader who will arrange for training before you start this task;
  • Keep the work-place clean and tidy and observe all safety notices;
  • Report any potential hazards to their Team Leader;
  • Do not report to work under the influence of drink or drugs.
